Make Radical a Compliment Again

In 19th-century Britain, the radical Chartists demanded universal suffrage, secret ballots, and equal electoral districts. At the time, these ideas were dismissed, but within decades, nearly all became law. What was branded radical became the foundation of modern democracy. In mathematics, the roots of negative numbers were once dismissed by Descartes as “imaginary.” Today, √−1 helps us describe quantum particles and model the alternating current that keeps our power grids running. Once again, what was inconceivable became indispensable. Herbert Marcuse pressed this point in the 1960s. For him, radical didn’t mean extreme; it meant going to the roots—questioning the system itself, refusing what he called our “comfortable, reasonable, democratic unfreedom.” For Marcuse, radicalism was the antidote to the One-Dimensional Man. Not long after, Saul Alinsky taught us the Rules for Radicals. Ridicule, pressure, polarization are tactics to force institutions to live up to their own rules. For better or worse, these “radical” tools are now mainstream political tactics. Yet Alinsky’s most overlooked rule remains his best: the price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative. For Alinsky, radical meant responsibility. Politics doesn’t end with a takedown—it ends with something built. Marcuse gave us the diagnosis; Alinsky gave us the toolbox. Radicalism is often confused with extremism. As Dr. Astrid Boetticher reminds us in her 2017 article, radicalism has historically been tied to emancipation and democracy, while extremism glorifies violence and conformity. Radicals seek freedom; extremists seek domination. The difference matters. Reclaiming radical as a compliment depends on seeing that distinction clearly.
